Kazuri Tribe are a Performance dance Troupe based in Brisbane, Qld, Australia.
(Kazuri means "small and beautiful" in Swahili.)Our field of dance is Tribal Style Belly Dance and Tribal Fusion. We come together to dance for ourselves and for our fellow tribe members in a supportive and friendly environment. Many of us have danced together for years in other Middle Eastern Dance forms. Formed in late 2005, we perform at haflas, fetes, festivals and concerts. 2012 has seen our tribe grow with dancers coming from all around Brisbane. In 2007 we performed a poi fusion dance for the Academy of Middle Eastern Dance Extravaganza, an Indian bollywood style dance, and a gothic fusion dance, along with some more traditional tribal dances. In 2008 we continued our work on Contemporary Tribal Fusion, and performed Tribal dance with Spanish Styling. We performed at the Sydney Middle Eastern Dance Festival in May '08. And wowed the audiences at many haflas with our own brand of humour- with a Pirate themed dance using swords and daggers. In July 2008 we also performed Arabian Spices, a strong dance with real attitude.2009 found Kazuri Tribe following in the footsteps of Urban Tribal Dance company, and we performed using techniques based upon Viewpoints, an improvised theatre based technique, adapted to suit dance. We brought our audiences to tears with our emotive "30 000 ft" performance. The AMED Extravaganza found us in top hats and trains, bustles and parasols as we danced to Roustabout using tribal fusion dance moves. The beginner class performed a Modern tribal dance at the Pyramid Pulse, while Kazuri Tribe continued to dance tribal fusion with a dance to "Sunday Arak", our theme being based on an old time dance hall in the Wild, Wild west!In 2010 we travelled to many places to perform and take workshops to challenge ourselves. Hilary Clinis, Paulette Rees-Denis, Michelle Joyce conducted workshops we attended and we also attended the Sydney Tribal and Trance Festival and the Wild Honey Festival in Byron Bay. We performed at Zillmere Multicultural Festival, the Hays Inlet festival, and the Tribal and Trance festival, as well as various halfas through the year. 2010 was a big year for Kazuri Tribe as we were accepted as re-enactors in our own right at the Abbey Medieval festival. Shortly after the Abbey we performed at the Academy of Middle Eastern Dance's Extravaganza and the Pyramid Pulse. At the Extravaganza, we performed our "Industrial Fusion" dance to "March of the Dead" by Wumpscut. Later that year we performed our fun dance "Lunatics have taken over the Asylum" by CollideIn 2011, we began the year with Wild Honey workshops run by the fabulous Deb Rubin. And helped in fund raisers for the Qld Floods. In April we performed at the Blue Water Festival in Shorncliffe, and in May we had a fabulous Halfa in a new Hall with fantastic facilities. A few of us made Drums with Krusey at Caloundra so we could use them at the Abbey Tournament Festival. We supported our sister dancers in Halfas in Tin Can Bay, Wynnum, Redcliffe, Bribie Island and Jacob's Well. We danced a Rachel Brice Choreography at the Extravaganza in our wonderful cream costumes, and at the Pyramid Pulse we produced swords and danced a lovely Tribal Style Improvised dance. We also attended workshops in Newcastle with Ariellah.
